Criminal Law 

The Criminal Law Practice Group advises and represents clients in a range of courts and tribunals. The practice group also offers the services of solicitor advocates who regularly appear for clients in a variety of jurisdictions and provide highly specialised, cost effective advocacy services. Members of the practice group have a thorough grounding in mainstream criminal law but also offer expertise in various specialist areas.

It is part of the CSO's Inquiries & Criminal Law Division.

What we can do for you

​The matters handled by the Criminal Law Practice Group include both advice and litigation in the following areas:

  • ​​​summary prosecutions of regulatory and other criminal offences
  • severity and conviction appeals arising from regulatory prosecutions
  • statutory interpretation of criminal and related legislation
  • applications for continuing detention orders and extended supervision orders for high risk violent and serious sex offenders
  • applications for apprehended violence orders
  • issues relating to sentencing, including sentencing guideline judgments, sentence administration and parole
  • matters relating to contempt of court including media contempt and non-compliance with     court orders
  • Crown representation of police and public sector employees in defending criminal matters and applications for apprehended violence orders
  • advice as to costs in criminal cases.

The Criminal Law Legal Practice Group also runs educational seminars for clients and conducts client training in the area of regulatory prosecutions.
